October 19th, 2009: A few games with Tiffany

Lost Cities
Our friend Tiffany came over after dinner on a Monday night. A few months earlier, Hilary and I got Tiffany and her husband Arthur a copy of Lost Cities, one of our favorite 2-player games. They had looked at the rules, but Tiffany wanted a demo of the game so she could teach it to Arthur. We played one round of the game and I came out a bit ahead, but Tiffany wanted to keep going, so we decided to play two rounds and add the scores. In the second round I scored a fairly respectable 50 points or so, but Tiffany scored well over 100 and took the game 153-86.

Elkfest
After Lost Cities, I asked Tiffany if she might want to try another game I had recently picked up - Elkfest. I described it as a "flicking game", which she didn't think sounded very appealing - I think she had something quite a bit more violent in mind. Elkfest involves gently flicking wooden discs across the table in order to get your wooden moose (German for "moose" = "elk") from one end of the table to the other. We played 3 quick games. She won the first one and I won the other two.

  1. I'm Famous! I made the Blog. FYI we took Lost Cities on our trip to New York. It was a great way to pass the time on the airplane. We felt pretty cool when a passenger stopped in the aisle to express how much he "loved that game!"

Thanks for making me look cool Chris!

I was also impressed with my 8 year old nephew who enjoyed the game. He never won a hand but was still excited to continue playing. Pretty cool.

Even though I have issues with the word flicking, I think next year I'll bring a flicking game. What little kid doesn't like one of those!

  2. Yeah, I wish the stupid big cards didn't make it such a tight fit on airplane tables (also make it a pain to shuffle), but at least the board can bridge the gap between tables for extra space.
