October 25th: Axis and Allies Pacific with Tom and Ian

Tom runs a D&D game that Ian and I often play in. We didn't have enough of our other usual players on this day, so the three of us decided to get together to play something else. We settled on Axis and Allies: Pacific, a 3-player game that simulates the Pacific branch of World War II through the use of many many many 6-sided dice.

As per actual WWII, this game pitted Japan (played by Tom) against everyone else - I took control of the Indian and Australian forces, while Ian played the Americans and the occupied Chinese. As per quite a few strategic level WWII games, in order to give the Axis player a chance to succeed in the face of what really has to be an overwhelming American economic juggernaut in order to have any semblance of verisimilitude the Axis player really just has to hold on to enough stuff for long enough in order to acheive victory.

Tom got off to a good start (which is really pretty inevitable in the setup as Japan is in position to execute devastating attacks on Pearl Harbor as well as a number of ships in the Indian fleet). However, rather than consolidating his gains and digging in to meet the inevitable American onslaught, Tom stayed on the offensive and probably overcommitted himself a bit, allowing Ian and I to push back rather more quickly than if he had hunkered down. A short late-game spate of bad rolls wasn't enough to hold us back as we eventually ground him down about 2 turns before he would have amassed enough victory points for the win.
