The followup to the innovative and popular Dominion, Dominion: Intrigue can be used as an expansion or played as a standalone game. I don't own Dominion, but I decided to buy Intrigue on its own with the thought that I could probably play it with Grey, who owns the base game.
Hilary very much liked Dominion, so despite the fact she was fighting a cold, I managed to talk her into trying out Intrigue.
One game in, I have the feeling that Intrigue isn't going to work so well on its own. The cards are generally more complex, and while adding a few more complex cards to the game is nice, playing with only complex cards is a little overwhelming. I like a little shaved truffle on my risotto, or even a generous amount of shaved truffle on my risotto, but just eating a whole truffle is less appealing.
Hilary stomped me in the game, but she felt that was more an indictment of the game rather than clever play on her part.
