Stick Around
I picked this up a few months ago at the Cast Off, a thrift store in Mammoth Lakes, CA. I'd perused the rules (printed on the back of the box - old school!) and thought it looked pretty similar to Blokus, which Hilary and I enjoy quite a bit.
Players take turns placing sticks, with the only rule being that each stick you place has to touch one of your existing sticks (the starting player may not place a stick that touches or crosses the center spot on the board). Play continues until one player can't place a stick.
This game was evidently published in 1999, but everything about it screams 1978: the clunky wooden board, the garishly colored playing pieces, rules and complexity that make it accessible to both the aging acid trippers and the up-and-coming cokeheads on the go.
If it seems I am rambling, it is only to avoid admitting how badly Hilary thrashed me at this game. We played 4 times (the game only takes about 5 minutes), and she beat me badly the first 3 games, managing to seal off nearly half the board twice and about 3/4 of the board the third time. I finally won - barely - on our 4th and final play, but it will probably come out again when Hilary needs a success experience.
Scores (in games):
Hilary 3
Chris 1
Game Time (all 4 games):
25 minutes
