I somehow managed to talk Hilary into 2 games of Agricola today. The first game was very close, and I pulled out a narrow 44-39 victory...or rather I thought I had until I realized that in the middle of the game I had used the Stable minor improvement (which lets you build a stable) as if it were the mini-pasture (which lets you fence a pasture which is generally a lot more useful). Hilary missed it at the time and I didn't catch it until the almost the end of the game (until Hilary played the card - both the stable and mini-pasture get passed to the other player after being played). I didn't say anything at first because she was doing well and I wanted to finish the game. I was kind of hoping she would win anyway, but after we counted the scores I told her what I had done.
On the strength of this revelation, we played a rematch. Hilary, as she often does, asked me for advice about how to play her hand, and I think I steered her astray by telling her to try baking. She did have some good cards for baking, but she also had some good ones for animal breeding, and as she was scuffling around with grain and ovens I managed to put together a pretty impressive set of pastures, and I won going away 41-26.
