On the morning of November 8th I went to the Black Diamond Games ding and dent sale and picked up a whole bunch of stuff quite cheap. One of the games I got was Hive.
Hive is probably most analagous to chess without a board. Players take turns moving their different hex-shaped pieces in a perscribed manor (different pieces can move in different ways) attempting to surround their opponent's queen. I got the old wooden version of the game (it is now also available with nigh-indestructable bakalite tiles).
I found myself at my parent's house that evening, and I broke out Hive to show my mom. My mom really likes bugs of all kinds (she is a retired elementary school teacher and teaching kids about bees was always one of her favorite parts of the year), so I knew the game would be a hit with her at least thematically. She really liked the pieces, and also liked the game quite well. I won, but being as it was the first game for both of us, I probably stumbled into the win as much as anything else.
