For the past few thanksgivings my family (my parents, my wife, my sisters, and their husbands and children) have spent thanksgiving in Mammoth Lakes . As per usual, I brought more games than I could have reasonably expected to play in a 4-day weekend, but I don’t get to trap my family in a smallish dwelling with a bunch of games all that often, so I wanted to be prepared.
Coloretto
On Wednesday night, we played a couple games of Coloretto. My dad doesn’t usually go in for games, but he watched the first game and kibitzed my mom heavily about what she should do every time she had a decision to make. After that, we all badgered him to play himself. He reluctantly agreed, but after he didn’t win he was quick to point out that he didn’t know what he was doing. My dad is a renowned Political Scientist, an excellent cook, a very good saxophone player, an accomplished fly-fisher, a self-proclaimed perfect hearts player, a fair poker player, and even played a pretty good game of basketball into his 50’s despite being 5’6”. The only story I can remember about him not being good at something involved him snapping all of his golf clubs in half long before I was born. It was interesting to see him out of his comfort zone for once, and it made me realize that while he was not good at everything he tried, he does tend to stick to doing those things that he is good at.

I felt this way watching my Dad play Super Mario Bros on the Wii. He was so lost! Is that a good mushroom or a bad mushroom? How do you guys all know where you're going? Maybe we should have explained about growing up with Super Mario, and not just let him think the synapses in his brain were failing due to old age. Next time, maybe!
